St Nicholas of Swafield sits proudly on a hill, by the road leading from North Walsham through Swafield to Trunch. From here, beautiful uninterrupted views open up over the surrounding fields, toward rural villages and their medieval church towers. St. Nicholas has a fine late 15th century painted rood screen – an example of one of the few surviving medieval rood screens in the county, making it a rare and historically important feature within the church.
Since 2012 the church is officially a Chapel of Ease, with irregular services. But since St Nicks Arts Centre opened here, there is so much to enjoy for everyone!

St Botolph’s Church, Trunch

In the centre of the village of Trunch, surrounded by a lovely collection of cottages and the more modern Crown Inn, is St Botolph’s church. Trunch Church is regarded as one of the most interesting of the village Churches of Norfolk (‘The Guide to Norfolk Churches’ by D.P. Mortlock and C.V. Roberts).
A large variety of excellent musicians and ensembles have performed at St Botolph’s over the past 30 years. The medieval church in Trunch offers an enchanting atmosphere and superb acoustics for classical music concerts.
Parking
There is free parking next to St-Nicks Arts Centre. A one-way traffic flow for parking was introduced in summer 2026. The traditional parking area (in front of St-Nicholas Church) now has an entrance to the new parking alongside the blackcurrant field. For large events, the traditional parking area in front of the church is reserved for people with disabilities.
Please park and drive carefully along the edge of the blackcurrant field. If you have a dog with you, it must be kept on a leash. Please never let your dog get too close to the blackcurrant bushes. Thanks to the local fruit farmer’s generosity, we have plenty of parking space for any kind of events, and parking and exiting have become even safer.
Dog Policy
St-Nicks Arts Centre is a dog friendly venue. Well-behaved, sociable dogs are permitted to attend concerts, movie nights, theatre performances, and other events—provided they are on a leash and under their owners’ supervision—with the exception of crowded events featuring dancing and loud music.
St Nicks Arts Centre will serve as a model of how an historic rural church can evolve into a thriving arts and community hub without losing its sacred and heritage identity. This initiative ensures that St Nicholas remains at the heart of Swafield and the local area — not only as a spiritual space, but as a beacon for creativity, learning and community spirit for generations to come.
